How does a pretty hamlet with windmills, cottages and paddocks transform into an inner-city suburb of Victorian terraces, Art Deco flats and rowdy pubs?

Join City of Sydney archivist Janet Villata and historian Nicole Cama as they showcase the collection’s assessment books and present a part how-to, part history talk using data and projects that focus on Darlinghurst as part of the National Trust's Australian Heritage Festival 2024.

Janet will explain how to access and search the assessment books, sharing her tips and tricks to get the most out of the City of Sydney’s collections. Nicole will talk about her work, Liverpool Street, Darlinghurst, an award-winning digital history project mapping people and places using the City of Sydney Archives, including over 4,000 assessment book entries, 92 maps, 250 images and 65 plans.

This talk will explore the vast array of historical data contained in the archives and show what’s possible when using data visualisation and storytelling to illustrate a place with a rich and layered past.
